You can find the Federation’s Music Development Plan here:
‘This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, extra-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
We are committed to the possibility of our pupils experiencing all that music can offer. The joy of self-expression alongside the cultural experience of attending concerts. It is school’s responsibility to find new opportunities to share, experience and perform music both inside and outside of school and school hours. We rely on the expertise and enthusiasm of individuals and groups in the school and local community to achieve this.’
Intent
Music plays a big role within the life of The Trent Rylands Federation and it is our intent that we make music an enjoyable part of the learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical activities both inside and outside of the classroom which enables them to build their confidence. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat and through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music across different cultures and through a variety of genres and time periods. Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach musical vocabulary such as volume, pitch and dynamics and we encourage children to discuss music using these terms. We enrich our Music curriculum with many opportunities for children to perform and develop a wide range of musical skills. These include musical workshops, visiting lunchtime concerts and performance opportunities both within school and in the wider community.
Implementation
The music curriculum at The Trent Rylands Federation ensures that pupils sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate music. This is embedded in the classroom activities as well as the weekly singing assemblies, in concerts and performances, the learning of instruments and in musical ensembles. We teach music through a topic-based approach to support children’s learning in music. A steady progression plan has been built throughout the federation, ensuring consistent musical development. Children listen to music styles from different times and places. These are explored through the language of music via active listening, performing and composing activities, which enable understanding of the context and genre. Children have opportunities to explore sounds, listen actively, compose and perform.
Impact
The impact of our Music curriculum is that all children at The Trent Rylands Federation have a love of music and increased levels of self-confidence. They will be inspired by different genres of music and will be able to enjoy music in a variety of ways, either as a listener, composer or performer.
