Intent

At the Trent Rylands Federation, our DT curriculum enables children to exercise their creativity in designing and making a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles and food products with a real-life purpose and which solve real and relevant problems. Providing opportunities for the children in this way is crucial in allowing them to be a part of today’s rapidly changing world and helps raise a generation of ‘innovative inventors’ for the future. Through our D&T curriculum, children are equipped with useful technical knowledge and understanding to support them in the design and making of their product e.g. understanding how to cut and join wood. We aim to provide children with opportunities to research, represent their ideas, explore and investigate, develop their ideas, make a product and then evaluate their work enabling them to adapt and improve their product. Our D&T curriculum allows children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Maths, Science and Art. These cross curricular links give children motivation and meaning for their learning.

Implementation

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Impact Statement

  • Design and Technology (D&T) is loved by teachers and pupils across our school.
  • Teachers have high expectations and quality evidence of D&T work can be presented in a variety of ways.
  • All children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified.
  • Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own work and the work of others.
  • Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by evaluating and improving their work.
